Recently, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL) announced that it has entered into a contract to potentially purchase a 6.67-acre parcel of land at 8300 Maryland Avenue in Clayton, currently owned by Caleres. The organization, well-known for its annual spring festival and rich history in the St. Louis cultural scene, hopes to build a state-of-the-art performing arts center on this site—pending the outcome of a multi-month due diligence process. Should the process reveal any obstacles that cannot be resolved, OTSL has the ability to withdraw from the contract.
“As we celebrate our 50th anniversary this year, we are excited by an unprecedented opportunity to build a new home,” said General Director Andrew Jorgensen. “We are still early in this process, but we look forward to being in dialogue with our Opera Theatre community, Clayton residents and businesses, and other stakeholders as we pursue necessary redevelopment steps over the next several months.”
Although this move could mark a major chapter in OTSL’s history, the organization acknowledges the importance of its longstanding relationship with Webster University, which has hosted Opera Theatre since 1976. Jorgensen emphasizes that OTSL would not be the company it is today without Webster University’s support, adding that the opera company looks forward to maintaining a strong partnership even as it plans for the future.
From a real estate perspective, the potential development of a performing arts center in Clayton is noteworthy. Large-scale cultural projects often bring significant investment and foot traffic to surrounding areas, potentially spurring commercial and residential growth. As OTSL continues its due diligence—which includes feasibility studies, fundraising, design planning, and cost estimates—community members, businesses, and local residents will be invited to share their input.
