One of Chicago’s most significant yet long-neglected architectural treasures is back in the spotlight. The J. J. Walser Jr. House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1903, has officially hit the market with an asking price of $350,000.
Located at 42 North Central Avenue in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, the Walser House is an early and important example of Wright’s Prairie School work. It is also one of the few remaining single-family Wright homes in Chicago and the only one on the city’s West Side. Despite its architectural importance — and its status as both a Chicago Landmark and a National Register property — the house has suffered years of neglect.
After the longtime owners passed away, the home sat vacant and eventually fell into foreclosure. Today, it is considered uninhabitable and will require an estimated $2 million or more in restoration, according to preservation advocates. Original details have been lost, exterior materials have deteriorated, and the structure itself remains fragile.
The modest listing price reflects not opportunity, but urgency. For the right buyer — one with vision, resources, and respect for Wright’s legacy — the Walser House represents a rare chance to rescue a foundational piece of American architecture.
