Persian Shield

One of my favorite plants for the St. Louis area has become Persian Shield. The purple color is so useful in the garden. I have been successful in clipping it back in the fall and storing the pots in my garage…they come back!  The same holds true with lantana.

  1. Ted — I’ve done the same with Mexican Petunia and Mexican Sage (Salvia leucantha) — cut back and into the garage for the winter. I’ve also taken cuttings of the Mexican Petunia before doing this and rooted them in water just in case.
If you’ve got some space in your garage, there are lots of plants you can overwinter in a dormant state there. Not only do you save money in the spring, but the plants get much larger the second (and following) years.
