Why is this so important?
If out-of-town visitors spend just half a day longer in the region and the number of visitors to the Arch returns to average levels before 2006, the economic impact would be the equivalent of a second Cardinals baseball season each year or more than four NCAA Men’s Final Four Tournaments. AKA Big money for the city.
Docomomo US’s national tour day is quickly approaching, and this year ModernSTL is celebrating with a behind the scenes guided tour of the exciting projects taking place at the grounds of our beloved Saarinen design Arch. The projects, coordinated by CityArchRiver Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, aim to ensure that “the Gateway Arch, its grounds, neighboring public space, and attractions will be a vital, welcoming, well-supported resource to the community and nation for generations to come” (cityarchriver.com).
The 90 minute walking tour, tour led by CityArchRiver staff, will highlight how the visions of Eero Saarinen and Dan Kiley are being interpreted, preserved, and enhanced by today’s designers to create new public spaces, an expanded museum space, walking and bicycles trails, and more for future generations to enjoy. The fun and informative tour will allow you to see firsthand many of the new spaces that are nearing completion. Starting at the steps of the Old Courthouse we will travel through the already complete Luther Ely Smith Square to catch a glimpse of the new museum entrance on our way to Eads Bridge and the Riverfront.
ModernSTL will be donating 50% of the ticket sales to CityArchRiver.
